Sayyidah Fatimah bint Muhammad (R)

  1. Sayyidah Fātimah (R) was born five years prior to the Nubuwwah of Nabī (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), and is the youngest daughter of Rasūlullāh (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). (Tabaqāt ibn Sa’d)

  5. Sayyidunā Ibn Mas’ūd (R) narrates, “Once Nabī (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) was performing ṣalāh in the haram near the Ka’bah. A few evil men threw the intestines of a camel on the back of Rasūlullāh (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) while he was in sajdah. The Mushrikīn laughed at Rasūlullāh (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) as he could not stand up due to the weight of the intestines. When Sayyidah Fātimah, who was still a young girl at that time, heard what had happened she hurried to assist her father. She threw the intestines off him and began cursing the Mushrikīn. When Rasūlullāh (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) completed his ṣalāh, he cursed them: ‘O Allah, deal with the Quraysh! O Allah, deal with the Quraysh!’ This curse was accepted and majority of them were killed in the Battle of Badr.” (Muslim)
  6. She had the honour of migrating for the sake of Allah. She migrated along with Sayyidah ‘Ā’ishah, Sayyidah Umm Ayman, and others (R). (Siyar A’lām al-Nubalā’)
  7. Her marriage to Sayyidunā Alī (R) took place in the second year after hijrah and her dowry was 4oo dirhams. (Al-Tārīkh al-Kabīr)
  8. Rasūlullāh (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) commanded Sayyidah ‘Ā’ishah (R) to decorate the house of Fātimah (R). Sayyidah Umm Salamah (R) assisted her in this task. ‘Ā’ishah (R) reports that they began preparations and brought good quality sand from Wādī Bathā’ with which they plastered the walls. They then cleaned and straightened the barks of date-palm tree and made two cushions out of them and prepared a dish with dates and raisins and a drink of sweet water. They then placed a stick in the corner of the room to hang clothes and leather water-skin. When these arrangements were completed, Sayyidah ‘Ā’ishah (R) commented: We never saw a marriage more exquisite than that of Fātimah. (Al-Sunan ibn Mājah)
  9. Rasūlullāh (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) decided that his daughter Sayyidah Fātimah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) will take care of internal household chores while Sayyidunā ‘Alī (R) will take care of external chores. (Hilyat al-Awliyā’)
  10. Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) would always direct her attention towards Allah and the hereafter, even at times of difficulty. She would happily comply. On one occasion, Sayyidunā ‘Alī (R) advised Sayyidah Fātimah (R) to go to Rasūlullāh (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and request for a slave who could assist in her household chores. She went to him but could not put forward her request on account of her modesty. Later he visited her to find out what she needed. Sayyidunā ‘Alī (R) took up the courage to tell Rasūlullāh (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and explained, “Fātimah does all the house work herself. She grinds the mill which have caused calluses on her hands. She carries bags of water which have left marks on her body. Some slaves have come to you, so I advised her to request for a slave so that she can be saved from these burdens.” In reply, Rasūlullāh (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) advised his daughter to do her house work herself. He then told her that when she intends sleeping at night, she should recite: Subhānallāh 33 times, Alhamdulillāh 33 times and Allāhu Akbar 34 times which equal to a 100. These are better for you than a slave. Sayyidah Fātimah (R) replied, “I am pleased with Allāh and His Rasūl.” (Bukhārī)
  11. Sayyidah Fātimah (R) treated the wounded during the Battle of Uhud, and cauterised the wounds of Rasūlullāh (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) when it would not stop bleeding. [Bukhārī]
  12. Sayyidah Fatimah (R) would visit the bereaved and console them. On one occasion, Rasūlullāh (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) found her outside her home and asked, “What is the reason for you exiting your home?” She replied, “O Rasūlullāh! I went to the family of the deceased and consoled them regarding their loved ones who had passed.” [Abū Dāwūd]
  13. Sayyidah Fātimah (R) fell ill 6 months after the demise of Rasūlullāh (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and passed away on Monday 3 Ramaḍān 11 A.H. She was 28 years at the time. [Al-Bidāyah]
  14. The ghusl of Sayyidah Fātimah (R) was performed by Sayyidah Asmā bint Umays (the wife of Abū Bakr (R)) and others. [Usd al-Ghābah]
  15. Sayyidah Fātimah (R) conveyed to the ummah the knowledge of dīn, by narrating the Sunnah practices of Rasūlullāh (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). [Musnad Ahmad]
  16. Sayyidah Ā’ishah al-Ṣiddīqah (R) narrates that when Sayyidah Fātimah (R) would come to Rasūlullāh (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), he would stand (in respect for her), hold her hand lovingly, kiss her, and make her sit on his seat. And when Rasūlullāh (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) would go to Sayyidah Fātimah (R), she would stand out of respect, kiss his blessed hand, and allow him to sit on her place. [Abū Dāwūd]
  17. Sayyidinā Abū Hurayrah (R) reports that Rasūlullāh (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “Jibrīl (AS) gave me glad tidings that Fātimah, my daughter, is the queen of the women of my ummah and that Hasan and Husayn are the leaders of the youth of Jannat.” [Nasā’ī]
  18. Sayyidinā Anas ibn Malik (R) reports that Rasūlullāh (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) stated, “Sufficient for you of the women of the universe are Maryam bint Imrān, Khadījah bint Khuwaylid, Fātimah bint Muhammad, and Āsiyah the wife of Fir’awn.”[Musnad Ahmad]

18 . Sayyidah Ā’ishah (R) said, “I have not seen anyone more truthful in speech than her except her father.” [Hākim]
