UUCSA holds strategic meeting in Johannesburg

Members of UUCSA met over 2 days for important strategic discussions affecting Muslims of South Africa. A total number of twenty four delegates representing nine organizations from the various provinces converged at the Offices of the Jamiatul Ulama South Africa (JUSA) for the two day indaba.

The meeting dealt with several critical issues:

Muslim Marriages

Attorney M S Omar together with members from the Association of Muslim Accountants and Lawyers (AMAL) joined the meeting via zoom to look at how the judgement of the Supreme Court of Appeal regarding Muslim marriages will impact Muslims in South Africa. The discussion also focussed on the proposed Single Marriage statute which seeks to incorporate the registration of all marriages in South Africa under one single Act.

Muslims living in a non -Muslim state

The discourse emanates from one primary issue: the nature of the relationship between Muslims and their non-Muslim society/government. The conversation took place against the backdrop of COVID 19 Regulations. It focussed on questions of how to respond to challenges facing Muslims in a non-Muslim country. It prompted questions on political engagement, worship, society, economy, etc.  Is it possible for a Muslim to love his country and also love his faith? Muslims in general grapple between loyalty to the country and submission to Allah.  Are the two mutually exclusive?

Vaccinations – The COVID 19 vaccinations has elicited a myriad of responses.  An excellent paper was presented by Mufti Shafique Jakhura on the Islamic position on vaccines.

Leadership Challenges

Presentations were made by certain key invited professionals. Robust analysis on the degenerative state of the Muslim of South Africa was made with emphasis on, leadership relevance, governance, organizational inclusivity and engaging in social and economic projects. The current challenges of dissension and disharmony prevailing among Muslims was also discussed.
